Some thoughts...

I think last year’s Sec 4 batch is real lucky, as there’s so much advice for them on the poly/jc route in the papers over the past few days. During my time, there was almost 0 such help or publicity?

Definitely, the polytechnics in Singapore has certainly done a great job of re-branding themselves, no less thanks to the good performance of many of their alumni. In the past, people associate poly students as lousier than jc that polys were a place to go if you can’t make it to the elite jc route. But now, that perception has been more or less overthrown. Polys are now viewed as an alternative to the strict, rigid jc system, and they offer a more practical and hands on approach which is much more attractive to others.

But then, the main bad point of going poly is that means you really must know what you want to do in the future, as there is a need for you to specialize. If you don’t then jc will be better cause at least you get 2 more years to really think about what you want to do in the future. For me, that’s where I prefer jc, since I’m really capricious. Haha, after all, I thought I wanted to be a scientist until I did SMP in sec school, and I thought that being an engineer was viable until I did research at DSO. Haha, looks like a lot of things is “I think, I thought, but who confirm?”. But those experiences that I had done are really eye openers for me and at least helps me eliminate some jobs from my options.

Oh well, as the education landscape in Singapore further develops, I’m starting to think that the future generations have both a boring and mundane life. I mean its like even though through train offers a lot of opportunities in terms of education, it seems to me be lacking in people interaction since you will be more or less stuck with the same group of people, which means you have a smaller social circle. Or maybe that’s where army comes in?
