The Army

I’m bored, real bored. Ok, a good week just flew by for me in camp, but I must say it has been a pretty boring week.

Ok, apart from the 2 Change of Commands which happened (anyway, my involvement in it was bare minimal), there was basically not much happenings apart from that crazy SOC session where we had to run through the obstacles thrice. That was indeed the killer for me since I have not touched SOC for a good nine months plus. Looks like a lot needs to be done for me to attempt to gain back my fitness level.

Anyway, I personally think that my camp is not exactly a good place to stay in much longer, especially with the new management coming in. As well all know, whenever there are changes, people will always want to show them the best first impression, so that’s where the tough part is because everyone will be there trying to put on a good image so as to impressed their new bosses.

Now, that day I read my friend views on National Service, and I admit that even I am also a little bit confused with National Service. Ok, as we all know, all those advertisements that we view do portray the Army as a sacred job tasked with the protection of our nation, and it does do a good job of portraying our army as one that is efficient and will respond to dangers at all times.

But once you go through NS, you do wonder about our capabilities, as well as the exact job scope of the Army. Yes, no doubt that the ultimate goal of the army is to protect our nation’s security, but the thing is, within the job you see a lot of office politics, a lot of situations on which you realized that not everybody is there solely for the purpose of protecting our nation. Instead, you actually do see a lot of office ‘wars’, as well as plenty of instances at which people seems to be much more interested in their jobs and careers and paychecks than the welfare and needs of their co-workers or subordinates. I don’t know, maybe there are some people who think that they are actually doing a good job of treating everyone fairly but is that really the case? Hmm, I guess that’s one shortcoming that most human beings tend to have – that they think that they are always right.

Ha, I know I’m going to start to sound contradictory but I do think that the above instances, which I was describing, happen almost everywhere. I mean during schooling days, we will complain about those HODs fighting among each other, all the VP vs. some other influential person, and teachers also competing with each other.

But there are also plenty of teachers whom I know that put the students’ interests above all, who care truly about the well being of the students, as well as work hard to ensure that the students gain. Sad to say, I don’t actually see individuals like that in my short NS life.

Could this be due to the fact that most people who sign on in the army do so more for the money than for the passion while teachers tend to be people who truly have the passion and love for teaching? I don’t know, but I tend to observe that most people who sign on in the army never really have that big altruistic goal…

Well, enough of my ramblings, I also don’t know what I’m really blogging about. I mean its starting to sound like a post on why people sign on. Haha….
