College Tour 6 -Peterhouse

Peterhouse is the oldest college in the University of Cambridge. It was founded in 1284 by Hugo de Balsham, Bishop of Ely. Peterhouse has 253 undergraduates, 125 graduate students and 45 fellows, making it the smallest College in Cambridge.

In the early seventeenth century, under the Mastership of Andrew Perne, the College was known as a centre for Arminianism.
In the 1980s Peterhouse acquired an association with Conservative, Thatcheritepolitics. Maurice Cowling and Roger Scruton were both influential Fellows of the College and are sometimes described as key figures in the so-called “Peterhouse right” – an intellectual movement linked to Margaret Thatcher. Michael Portillo and Michael Howard both studied at Peterhouse. This tradition of intellectual political thought has been upheld by the recent establishment of the Peterhouse Politics Society.Oh, Peterhouse happens to be pretty unique as the famous Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge sits right in between the 2 sides of the college. As such, it has a really sprawling college garden. As you can see from the photo below, there's an apple tree in the college! I was really surprised to see it!

Anyway, it is usually relatively rare to find Singaporeans studying in Peterhouse, as it is such a small college. Well, but surprisingly, I actually know 2 friends who are currently studying there now! Oh, Mr Ho (Wei Kang) was from Peterhouse as well.
