China Xiamen Trip Day 3

Today was the day that we finally left Xiamen to go to Chaozhou. Yes, I never knew that such a city existed, so it was quite interesting to see and hear about the famed Chaozhou city walls that people have been talking about.

Our first stop on the leaving the heart of Xiamen (which is actually an island) is to visit the 集美学村 (Jimei Village), which is the home of Tan Kah Kee, the famous overseas Chinese pioneer. Over there, you can see the schools which he helped to set up (and still functioning!), as well as saw the place that was his residence (ok, they did rebuild it). It was quite interesting to take a look at one Singapore’s most famous pioneers and his contributions to his homeland too.

Next stop is to go to view the 风动石 in 东山. Actually, 东山 is an island, not really a mountain, and it is a county in China’s Fujian province. The stone looks special and cool, and it is supposedly moveable when there are really strong winds. Ha, but apparently even my tour guide has never seen that happening. We also took a visit to the 关帝庙 there (which is like 1000 plus years old!), and I must say I have never ever saw a more fearsome and impressive statue of 关公 in my life!

Finally, we reached Chaozhou at around 4 and we took a view of its famed city walls. Well, or the old city walls, which ain’t the original ones. We also took a lot of the famed 箱子桥, which sad to say was under maintenance, so I can’t walk on it. We also went to 开源寺 to have a look, but what left the deepest impression on me was the huge numbers of beggars there. And they literally go begging up to you and your vehicle! Hmm, that’s unlike the KL’s beggars who just lie in a fanciful post on the middle of the road.

At night we came back to look at the night scenery of Chaozhou city and I must say it was gorgeous. Then, we went to the Chaozhou city 人民广场 to view its fountains and they were lovely! They have a massive musical fountain there – I think it is as big as the entire Suntec city fountain terrace, and I will say it is like a combination of our Sentosa’s musical fountain, the Suntec city fountain and the Bugis Junction fountain! Yes, it was beautiful. I was really impressed to see it all!
