China Xiamen Trip Day 4

We departed to Shantou City early in the morning, but along the way we went to the 韩文公祠 in 潮州. The place is built to remember the contributions that 韩愈 made to the people of Chaozhou. It is a really big shrine, and the steps all the way up to the top hall is like 150 steps high! However, the trip was worth all the effort as the view from the top was lovely, and you get a chance to see a lot of historical artifacts as well.
Next, we started on the ride to Shantou. We went to 2 temples on the way – 龙泉岩 & 天坛花园 白花间庙. The temples are very different I must say. The first one, the龙泉岩 is sited deep in the countryside region and the roads there are really bumpy. However, it is built on a really lovely stone mountain which I have never seen before. I must say that the stones look nice. The other one, 白花间庙 is built recently by the rich Chinese who have managed to carve out a success for themselves. It is really modern and to some extent, I will say it looks like the 光明山of Singapore.

Anyway, we reached Shantou by noon and I had lunch at a really decent Teochew restaurant. The food is pretty good, and it is not too salty or oily, unlike Xiamen. I must say I truly enjoyed the food there. Oh, but they do eat a lot of oysters there (I think it is super cheap there!), as well as funny things like pig trotters tendon which I have never eaten before in my life. It was a pity that I failed to eat Yam paste, which is one of my favorite desserts of all. But the sweet potatoes cooked with sugar were lovely, and it did remind me of what we ate in Taipei too!

After that, we just walked around the night market near the hotel and the things there are really cheap. Hmm, I bought 3 T-shirts for S$21 only! The material of the shirts are decent and comparable with Singapore’s Bossini/Giordano, so I must say it was money well spent. Later on at night, I also walked along the market area trying to find some Teochew small eats, but a pity most of them are not meant to be stored so I couldn’t bring them back to Singapore and share with you.
