Lets Talk About...

Lets talk about sex. Ha, yes I know most of you will be shocked of me talking about such a taboo topic (actually is it really taboo or personal?) on my blog, but then, sex has being in the news for the whole of past week that I do feel like sharing some of my opinions on it here.

First thing first, with regards to the results of the Durex survey, I wasn’t surprised that Singaporeans are sexually so in active. I mean 70 odd times a year? That’s like not even twice a week. But that can be explained due to the busy and hectic lifestyle that most Singaporeans live.

BUT, what really caught my eye was the fact that Singaporeans are so promiscuous! According to the Durex survey, the average Singaporean has like 7.2 sex partners! Worse, I also read in the papers where a jc student being interviewed actually claimed that she know of friends who have like 10 over sex partners! Now, that is NEWS! Firstly, it does make me wonder about the people around me, and also about what our society has become. Has Singaporeans become so open?

Well, the good thing is that according to ST, that only one in four or five of teens in Singapore are sexually active. That sounds like a relatively small proportion of the population. (Actually hor, its more leh, cause what about those who had sex before but not sexually active??) But, surveys also suggest the average age which people has of their first taste of sex in Singapore is 18. Tsk, so what, are the group of people around me that rare breed or it just happens that everybody has secrets? Ha.

Anyway, the figures are certainly shocking, but not that unexpected. After all, the world is now exposed to so much of the Western culture and ideas that people will instead think people who believed in premarital sex to be old and obsolete. But then, of course, I do not deny that there are people who have values of abstinence do exist, but whether they adhere strictly to it (after all, some things are beyond the control of the mind) is another issue to.

Anyway, the papers today were debating on the issue of sex education to teens. The debate centers on whether sex education should teach them the importance of contraception, or it should be totally not mentioned so that people will stick to abstinence.

My personal opinion is that yes, abstinence should be the right message to spread to all. But, that message can only spread so far. As the results of the recent surveys shows, there is still a tendency for teens to “experiment”. So, here comes the other part, contraception. I strongly believed that contraception should be taught to teens. Ok, maybe they can split sex education into 2 parts. One is on abstinence, in which they ought to show people that having a sexual relationship is not all there is to any relationships, as well as to show teens the importance of keeping it to one partner. On top of that, they should also show teens the bad things about having a promiscuous sex life, all the risks and dangers that you are putting yourself at risk to. Through this, they can then highlight the importance of the usage of contraceptives.

Anyway, after saying so much, I must say that I think a lot of people in Singapore believe in abstinence, but the truth is, what you do and what you think can be different, especially when your body demands it. So end of the day is, it is always better to be well prepared, just in case anything happens. Ha.

There’s still a thought ringing in the back of my head… How many of my friends are sexually active? Ha.
